Continental ’25 de Radu Jude

A film by Radu Jude

With: Eszter Tompa, Gabriel Spahiu, Adonis Tanța, Oana Mardare, Șerban Pavlu, Annamária Biluska, Ilinca Manolache

Orsolya is a bailiff in Cluj, the main city in Transylvania. One day she has to evict a homeless man from a cellar, an action with tragic consequences that triggers a moral crisis which Orsolya must weather as best she can.

It’s been said here and there that Continental ’25 is a little Radu Jude, a quickly made film based on a few recurring principles seen in his filmography. On the contrary, it seems finely studied, to take the viewer where Jude wants to take him, to share his historical observations – looking at the past to understand the present, its traces on the present – and his philosophical observations, to confront him with his conscience, Jude raises the absurd like no other, introducing unexpected, light-hearted moments of farce that coexist with strange jokes (monk jokes, in particular, repeated here as philosophical adages that mirror what’s happening on screen). We spend a pleasant moment, and the film, with its many details and subtleties slipped in here and there, between two absurd or perfectly unexpected situations, between two quotations from nowhere other than Radu Jude’s brain, deserves several viewings. Our favorite for the Golden Bear.
