The 81st Venice Film Festival awards

The jury, headed by President Isabelle Huppert, has announced its awards. The top prize goes to a popular director who has never won before, Pedro Almodovar, for his first Hollywood drama. The Grand Jury Prize went to Maura Delpero‘s classic but accurate Vermiglio , while the Director’s Prize went to Brady Corbet for his ambitious The brutalist, the Screenplay Prize to Walter Salles I’m still here and the Special Jury Prize to April from Dea Kulumbegashvili. The list of winners more or less echoes what could be heard in the aisles of the Palazio Casino and the Sala Grande, except for the choice of acting prizes. While the Coppa Volpi for Best Actress went to Nicole Kidman, who was absent yesterday due to the death of her mother the day before, for a role that was more sultry on paper than on screen, foreign critics questioned the awards given to Vincent Lindon (Daniel Craig and even Adrian Brody were more expected) and Paul Kircher, suspecting Isabelle Huppert of having sought to reward the two French films (Their childrem after thme by the Boukherma brothers, and Play with fire by the Coulin sisters).
